Hybrid ecosystems exist in a liminal state. They are not quite ecosystems “as-they-were” and yet they exist, operate, and function as ecosystems. They are modulated by human activity – and in this case, robotic activity – but they are still bound to their former realities. BDTB explores the position of robots in these hybrid ecosystems.
BDTB was a 9-day collaborative artist residency at Shanghai’s Chronus Art Centre with Laura Beloff, Stavros Didakis, Jonas Jørgensen, Stig Anton Nielsen and myself. The residency culminated in a prototype exhibition which combined hard- and soft-robotics with a chemical artificial life system to explore the creation of a small hybrid ecosystem of life-like entities.
